One of the key requirements when trying to execute a pistol squat is mobility through the ankles so as lower you CAN push your knee WAY FORWARD OVER YOUR TOE in order to keep your centre of mass above your heel and not fall backwards. Once this is achieved the stability increases the force and strength improves much quicker
